AI agents can produce in minutes what once took a developer an afternoon.

That sounds like pure productivity.

But there is a catch:

Code generation is becoming faster than human understanding.

A 2026 enterprise study found that AI-assisted developer throughput eventually reached 2.09× its previous level.

Reviewer workload also roughly doubled.

Meaningful human review dropped from approximately 48% to 21%.

The bottleneck did not disappear.

It moved from writing code to verifying it.

Did the agent solve the right problem?

Does the change fit the architecture?

What happens outside the happy path?

Who will understand this code six months from now?

Fast code can pass unit tests and still contain security flaws, hidden dependencies, unnecessary complexity, or a fundamentally wrong interpretation of the requirement.

And agents do not hesitate.

Give one a bad assumption, and it can confidently turn it into fifteen changed files before a human finishes reading the ticket.

That is the real downside of agentic speed:

We are creating code faster than we can build confidence in it.

The lesson:

Software velocity is not the amount of code produced.

It is the speed at which a team can safely understand, verify, deploy, and maintain a change.

Agents should make engineering judgment more powerful—not make it optional.

Has AI accelerated your team’s delivery, or has it simply moved the work downstream into review, rework, and maintenance?
